A. PLENARY AND VERBAL INSPIRATION OF THE SCRIPTURES
We believe the scriptures of
the Old and New Testaments to be God-breathed (a), plenary (every word) (b),
verbal (consisting of words) (c), and inerrant in the original writings (d).
They are the supreme and final authority in faith and life (e).
a. 1Cor 14:37; 2:9-10; 2Tim
3:16; 2Pet 1:21; 3:15-16.
b. Mt 5:18; 2Tim 3:16

55:11; Mat 5:17-18; John 10:35; Rom 15:4; 2Tim 3:16-17.
B. SALVATION BY FAITH ALONE
We believe that salvation is
received by means of personal faith in Jesus Christ alone without benefit of
or requirement for works (a), that it is accomplished as a grace gift by God
the Father (b) through the work of His Son Jesus Christ on the cross (c).
a. John 3:16-18; Rom 3:19-28;
4:5; 5:1; Gal 2:16; Eph 2:8-9; I John 5:11-13.

c. John 3:16; 14:6; Rom 5:5-11;
1Cor 15:1-4.
C. SUBSTITUTIONARY DEATH OF JESUS CHRIST
We believe that Jesus Christ,
perfect and without sin (a), died as a substitutionary sacrifice on the cross
(b), bearing punishment for all the sins of the entire world, past, present
and future (c).
a. 2Cor 5:21; 1Pet 1:18-19;
2:22; 3:18; 1John 3:5.
b. Rom 3:23-26; 5:6-8; 1Cor
15:3-4.
c. 2Cor 5:14-21; 1Tim 2:5-6;
1John 2:2.
D. THE GODHEAD
We believe in the one (a)
eternal God (b) existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (c).
They are co-eternal (d) and coequal as to nature, attributes, and perfection
(e).
a. Deut 4:35; 6:4; Isa 45:5-6;

d. Gen 1:1-2; John 1:1.
e. Isa 48:16; John 5:17-18;
10:30; 1 John 5:7.
E. DEITY OF JESUS CHRIST
We believe that the Lord and
Savior, Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be
God, having been conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary (a),
lived a sinless life, did not possess a sinful nature (b), and is both true
God and true man (c).
a. Isa 7:14; Mat 1:18; Luke
1:34-35.
b. 2Cor 5:21; Heb 4:15; 7:26;

We believe that the physical
body of Jesus Christ was resurrected (a) and ascended into heaven (b) where He
is our Advocate and High Priest (c).

15:3-8.
b. Luke 24:50-52; Acts 1:9-11;
1Pet 3:21-22.
c. Ro 8:34, Heb 7:24-25, 8:1,
1John 2:1
G. SPIRITUALITY
Just as salvation is by grace
though faith, so also the whole Christian way of life is by grace through
faith. We believe that spirituality is an absolute condition in the life of a
believer in the present age wherein he is filled or controlled by the Holy
Spirit, walking in love and fellowship with the Lord Jesus Christ. We believe
that spirituality is distinct from maturity; that a believer becomes carnal
through an act of mental, verbal, or overt sin; and that spirituality or
fellowship with Christ is restored solely by personal confession of that sin
to God the Father.
John 15:7-8; Rom 6:11-13; 2Cor
5:6-7; Gal 5:16; Eph 5:15-20; I John 1:9.
H. RESPONSIBILITY OF THE BELIEVERS
It is God's will that every
believer should grow in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ by
the regular and frequent intake of Bible Doctrine. This is the basis of
glorifying Jesus Christ in the angelic conflict (a). Every believer has been
called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh but after the spirit,
and so to live in the spirit that they should not fulfill the lust of the
flesh; but the flesh being still in us to the end of the earthly life, needs
to be kept constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest
itself to dishonor His name (b).
a. John 17:14-17; Mat 4:4; Eph
4:11-16; 2Pet 3:18.
b. Rom 8:12-13; 13:14; Gal
5:16-25; Eph 4:22-24; 5:18; Col 3:1-10.
I. SATAN
We believe that Satan is a
created being who exists in personality and reality. He is the enemy of both
God and of believers. He is the leader of a group of fallen angels.
Job 1:6-7; Mat 4:2-11; 25:41;
Acts 5:3; 1Pet 5:8; Rev 12:7-10.
J. ETERNAL STATE
We believe that all those who
do not believe in God's provision of redemption through the death of Christ
are eternally separated from God (a); they will be cast into the Lake of Fire
where they will not be annihilated but will be punished with everlasting
torment (b). We believe in a literal heaven (c). The Church-age believers
pass immediately into God's presence at death (d).
a. Luke 16:19-26; John 3:17-18;
5:25-29.
b. Mat 25:41; Rev 20:14-15.
c. Acts 7:55-56; Phil 3:20;
1Thes 4:16.
d. John 14:3; 2Cor 5:8; 1Thes
4:17.
K. RAPTURE AND RESURRECTION
Believers who have died remain
in heaven in conscious bliss until the resurrection of their glorified bodies
at the Rapture when body and soul will be united and remain with the Lord
forever (a). Old Testament and Tribulation believers will receive their
resurrection bodies at the Second Advent (b).
a. 1Cor 15:42-58; Phil 3:20-21;
1Thes 4:13-18.
b. Dan 12:1-2; Rev 20:4-6.
L. THE HOLY SPIRIT
We believe that the Holy
Spirit is God. He is a distinct person of the Godhead who convicts the world
of sin, righteousness and judgment (a); regenerates those who believe (b);
baptizes them into the body of Christ (c); indwells all believers of the
present age (d); seals them unto the day of redemption (e); is the only source
of power for acceptable worship and service (f); is the infallible interpreter
of Holy Scripture (g); is ever present to testify concerning Jesus Christ
(h). It should be the desire of every believer to be controlled by the Holy
Spirit (i).
a. John 14:16-17; 16:7-11;
1John 5:7.
b. John 3:5-6; Tit 3:4-5.
c. 1Cor 12:12,13.
d. John 14:16-17; Rom 8:9-11;
1Cor 3:16; 6:19.
e. 2Cor 1:21-22; Eph 4:30.
f. Acts 1:8; Rom 8:26-27; Gal
5:16-25.
g. John 14:26; 1Cor 2:9-16.
h. John 16:12-15; 1Pet 1:10-12.
i. Eph 5:18.
M. ETERNAL SECURITY
We believe that all believers
everywhere, once saved, shall be kept saved forever.
John 5:24; 10:28-29; Rom 8:1;
8:38-39; 1John 5:13; Jude 24-25.
N. GREAT TRIBULATION
We believe that the present
age will end and will be followed by Daniel’s seventieth week (a). The
Abomination of Desolation spoken by Daniel the prophet will appear in the
middle of the seventieth week (b). The appearance of the Abomination of
Desolation will begin the most terrible time ever known in history, called
“The Great Tribulation” (c). The Great Tribulation is finally climaxed by the
visible and personal return of Jesus Christ to set up his Kingdom (d).
a. Dan 9:24-27.
b. Dan 9:27; Mat 24:15.
c. Jer 30:7; Dan 12:1; Mat
24:21-22.
d. Zech 14:1-9; Mat 24:29-30;
2Thes 1:5-10.
O. MAN CREATED AND FALLEN
We believe that the immaterial
part of man was created in the image of God but the first man, Adam, willfully
sinned and fell from God's grace (a). In Adam, all men have inherited a
sinful nature and all men have sinned and have incurred spiritual death, which
is separation from God. Thus all men now are alienated from God and remain
totally unable to redeem themselves (b). Those who reach moral responsibility
are held accountable for their sinfulness in thought, word, and deed (c).
Through Jesus Christ, God created man and all that has come into being (man,
animals and the universe did not evolve) (d).
a. Gen 1:26-27.
b. Gen 2:17; Ps 51:5; Rom 3:23;
5:12; 6:23; 7:17-25; Eph 2:1-3.
c. Rom 2:1-15; Jas 2:10.
d. Gen 1:1-2:3; Ps 139:15-16;
Col 1:16.
P. THE CHURCH - UNIVERSAL AND LOCAL
We believe that the Church
Universal, which is the Body and Bride of Christ, includes the whole company
of believers from Pentecost to the Rapture and that Jesus Christ is the Head
and the Bridegroom (a). We believe that the local church is any autonomous
group of believers in Christ, in one geographical location, united in the
Spirit, who meet together for instruction in the Word of God, prayer,
observance of the Lord's supper, and observance of the ordinance of baptism by
immersion (b). We believe that the mission of the Church is to glorify God
and to present Jesus Christ to the world (c).
a. 2Cor 11:2; Eph 1:22-23; Col
1:24.
b. Mat 3:13-16; Acts 20:7; 1Cor
1:2, 11:23-29.
c. John 15:15-16; 1Cor 10:31;
Phil 2:15-16.
Q. SPIRITUAL GIFTS
We believe that God the Holy
Spirit, in grace and apart from human merit, sovereignly bestows spiritual
gifts to believers in this dispensation. Some of the permanent spiritual
gifts which exist today are: pastor-teacher, evangelist, administrator,
helper, giving and showing of mercy. We further believe that the temporary
spiritual gifts ceased with completion of the Canon of Scripture, and these
were: apostleship, prophecy, speaking in tongues, interpreting tongues,
healing, and working of miracles.
Rom 12:4-8; 1Cor 12:1-11, 27-31;
13:8-10; Eph 4:7, 11-16; 1Pet 4:10-11.
R. DISPENSATIONAL VIEWPOINT
This Church, by virtue of a
consistent literal interpretation of the Scriptures, is Dispensational,
Pre-millennial, and Evangelical. The English word dispensation comes from the
Greek word oikonomia , which means “stewardship.” A Dispensation or
Stewardship is a distinguishable economy or period in the outworking of God’s
purpose(a). We believe that Israel always denotes the physical posterity of
Jacob, and is never to be confused with the church (b)..
a. Col 1:24-26; Eph 1:9-10;
3:2-6.
b. 1 Cor 10:32; Rom 10:1,
11:1,25-28
S. DEATH OF CHRIST
We believe there are two
aspects of the death of Christ - spiritual death and physical death. The
spiritual death of Christ is the three hours on the cross during which He was
judged in our place for the sins of the world to accomplish redemption (a).
Physical death was the point when Christ voluntarily yielded up His soul and
spirit after the work of redemption was completed. The physical death was a
necessary part of the total work of Christ on the cross from numerous
standpoints, including: the verification of the fact that redemption had been
accomplished; the necessity for a bodily resurrection of the God-man as the
First Fruits of the resurrection; the fulfillment of the covenants to Israel;
Headship of the Church (b).
a. Mat 27:45-46; Luke 23:44-45;
Rom 3:24-25; 5:8-9; 2Cor 5:21; Eph 1:7; 1Pet 1:18-19.
b. Mat
27:50; Mk 15:37; Luke 1:31-33; 23:46; John 19:30; Acts 2:30-33; Rom 4:25; 1Cor
15:22-23; Eph 1:20-23; Col 1:18.

In March of 1977, a small group of people meeting in a home
invited Todd Kennedy, Pastor of Spokane Bible Church to visit and provide
guidance on starting a Bible-teaching church in the Tri-Cities. Pastor Kennedy
arrived April 12,1977, and met with the group in the home of Marv and Pauline
Borgeson. Others attending were Norval and Sandi McMillin, Dean and Doris Jones,
Ben and Stella Smith, Kirk Ellison, Marcia Thorson (now Jensen), Dan and Pam
Mildon and Kay Hayes. Pastor Kennedy provided doctrinal information on starting
a tape group church with the view of eventually having a pastor-teacher.
They decided to start a church as a tape group and
incorporated as Columbia Bible Church using a copy of Spokane Bible Church’s
Constitution June 20, 1977. Dean Jones was the president, Dan Mildon the
treasurer and Marv Borgeson the secretary. The church started meeting in a
conference room at the International Dunes Motel at 1715 Fowler Road in
Richland, Washington.
In August 1977, Pastor Bruce Einspahr visited Columbia
Bible Church as a candidate for pastor. On August 28th, 1977, the
first official business meeting for Columbia Bible Church was held. It was
decided to call Bruce as Pastor if he accepted the invitation, considering our
limited economic resources at the time. Thus, we offered Bruce $900 per month,
with the caution that it could be guaranteed for only a few months. He accepted
our offer and started teaching services November 5th, 1978, at the
Richland Community Center. A Wednesday night service was soon added February 21,
1979, in the Pastor's home in Burbank.
During Columbia Bible Church's 2nd Annual
Business Meeting (3rd overall), held January 28th, 1979,
the possibility of acquiring church property was first discussed. The first
official Deacons were elected at that meeting and those elected were Dean Jones,
Dan Mildon, and Ron Smith, who also became the first officers of the church.
On December 23, 1979, Columbia Bible Church moved to the
Seventh Day Adventist Church at 1897 Wright Ave. in Richland. On September 27th,
1981, it was decided in the Men's Meeting that a Sunday evening class would be
held in individual homes. This class would have a more informal format to
encourage questions. In May of 1983, Pastor Einspahr first got computerized
with the acquisition of an IBM personal computer to assist him in his studies of
the Word of God.
In 1984, a church property search committee was formed to
buy property. The preferred location included West Kennewick and the Meadow
Springs area, with West Pasco as the number two choice. In 1985, 1.6 acres in
West Pasco on 84th and Argent was purchased for $14,500 because land
was more reasonably priced in West Pasco. Later, in 1989, 4.2 acres of adjacent
property was purchased for the bargain price of
$10,000.
Columbia Bible Church held its first Family Church Camp
Aug. 22-24th, 1985. The second Family Church Camp was held at Jubilee
Lake in Oregon in 1986. In 1987, Family Camp was held at Camp Kiwanis outside
of Walla Walla and has been held there periodically ever since.
In February of 1987, we started supporting Tim Beard, our
first Missionary outside the church for $100 per month. Tim, at that time was a
missionary to the Navajo Indians in New Mexico.
In 1991, the church struggled with plans on how to put up a
church building with a building fund of only $42,000. A special meeting was
held with Rev. David Piper of Grace Baptist Church who encouraged us to use some
creative financing and go into debt. Afterwards, the church decided not to go
into debt, but to wait on God’s will and not start a building until we had
$100,000 in the Building Fund. Building plans were drawn up and ready in the
event that finances were available.
Circumstances changed and I believe God's Will directed us
in Jan. 31, 1993, to have Columbia Bible Church join with Good Shepherd Baptist
Church. Columbia Bible Church retained the same name and Constitution, and thus
in essence, was given equity in the 5 1/4 acres and the building at our present
location of 202 S. Van Buren St. in West Kennewick. With the building fund
money, the proceeds from the sale of our West Pasco properties, some generous
donations and equity already in the property, we were able to pay off all the
debt against the building and property.
In 1994-95, we were able to build the classroom and
workroom addition unto the original building and later make both real and
personal property improvements without going into debt. Thus, God has
financially blessed Columbia Bible Church abundantly through the years. God has
provided just enough to do what His plans required and stay debt free.
Recently, we have built up surplus funds which the current Deacons have been
trying to spend as God directs. His grace abounds.
In 1998, Pastor Einspahr and Marlene traveled to Israel for
a five-week biblical history tour thanks to a generous Christmas gift from the
Congregation. We have since been blessed with pictures and wonderful insights
about biblical lands and history. We also learned from Marlene how to pack
water.
Columbia Bible Church has had a slow but steady growth
since its inception. Teaching the Word of God has always been the focal point
at Columbia Bible Church, both from the pulpit and the Sunday School classrooms.
Every year we rotate a Deacon off the Deacon Board after he
has served a three-year term. I don't remember anyone serving back-to-back
terms. Thus, there has been a continual gradual changing of the guard. There
is no permanent ruling group as with most churches, which avoids the temptation
of any to get power-hungry. The vast majority, if not all Deacons, at this
church serve because they were nominated by the Deacon Board and elected by the
church members. They are willing to serve as before God to the church, but are
usually happy and relieved when their term is over.
The heart and soul of Columbia Bible Church is a
combination of the Holy Spirit working through the Pastor's faithfulness in
teaching the Word of God, all the prayers, the volunteer work people do with
little, if any, recognition, and the generous giving. Certainly heavenly
rewards will far supercede any man-made recognition that is received on earth.
We've had several dear Saints from Columbia Bible Church
pass on before us. We are very thankful that they are in the Lord's presence
today. We are also very thankful for our many pleasant thoughts and memories of
them, and for God's grace to us in knowing that we, as Believer's in Jesus
Christ, will join them one day in Heaven!
May Columbia Bible Church's future be as bright or brighter
than its past. May it continue to be a shining light for God's glory. May it
always lay as its foundation the teaching of the Word of God. I really
appreciate our church in that people just naturally pitch-in and do things and
fill needs usually without even being asked. I believe it shows so well how the
body of Christ can work so well together!

A. PLENARY AND VERBAL INSPIRATION OF THE SCRIPTURES
We believe the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to
be God-breathed (a), plenary (every word) (b), verbal (consisting of words) (c),
and inerrant in the original writings (d). They are the supreme and final
authority in faith and life (e).
a. (God Breathed):
1Cor 14:37
If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that
the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord.
1Cor 2:9-10
But as it is written: "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into
the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him." But
God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all
things, yes, the deep things of God.
2Tim 3:16
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine,
for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
2Pet 1:21
For prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they
were moved by the Holy Spirit.
2Pet 3:15-16
And consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation--as also our
beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you,
as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some
things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own
destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.
b. (plenary)
Mat 5:18
"For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one
tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.
2Tim 3:16
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine,
for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
c. (verbal)
Mat 4:4
But He answered and said, "It is written, `Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'"
John 6:63
"It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I
speak to you are spirit, and they are life.
d. (inerrant)
John 17:17
"Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.
Tit 1:2-3
In hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began,
but has in due time manifested His word through preaching, which was committed
to me according to the commandment of God our Savior;
Heb 6:17-18
Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the
immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath, that by two immutable
things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong
consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.
e. (final authority)
Ps 19:7-11
The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the LORD
is sure, making wise the simple; The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing
the heart; The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; The fear
of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the LORD are true and
righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, Yea, than much fine
gold; Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them Your servant
is warned, And in keeping them there is great reward.
Ps 119:11
Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You!
Isa 55:11
So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me
void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing
for which I sent it.
Mat 5:17-18
"Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to
destroy but to fulfill. "For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass
away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is
fulfilled.
John 10:35
"If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot
be broken),
Rom 15:4
For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we
through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.
2Tim 3:16-17
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine,
for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of
God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
B. SALVATION BY FAITH ALONE
We believe that salvation is received by means of personal
faith in Jesus Christ alone without benefit of or requirement for works (a),
that it is accomplished as a grace gift by God the Father (b) through the work
of His Son Jesus Christ on the cross (c).
a. (by faith in Jesus)
John 3:16-18
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever
believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. "For God did not
send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him
might be saved. "He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not
believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the
only begotten Son of God.
Rom 3:19-28
Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law,
that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for
by the law is the knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God apart from
the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the
righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who
believe. For there is no difference; for all have sinned and fall short of the
glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is
in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through
faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had
passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the
present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the
one who has faith in Jesus. Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law?
Of works? No, but by the law of faith. Therefore we conclude that a man is
justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law.
Rom 4:5
But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his
faith is accounted for righteousness,
Rom 5:1
Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our
Lord Jesus Christ,
Gal 2:16
"Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in
Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified
by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law
no flesh shall be justified.
Eph 2:8-9
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it
is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
1John 5:11-13
And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is
in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God
does not have life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name
of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you
may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
b. (grace gift)
John 3:16
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever
believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
John 6:40
"And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and
believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last
day."
Rom 5:8
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still
sinners, Christ died for us.
Eph 2:8
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it
is the gift of God,
2Tim 1:8-9
Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His
prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the
power of God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according
to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us
in Christ Jesus before time began,
c. (through work of Jesus on the cross)
John 3:16
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever
believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
John 14:6
Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the
Father except through Me.”
Rom 5:5-11
Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our
hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. For when we were still without
strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous
man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But
God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners,
Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we
shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we were
reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been
reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only that, but we also
rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received
the reconciliation.
1Cor 15:1-4
Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which
also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you
hold fast that word which I preached to you--unless you believed in vain. For I
delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for
our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose
again the third day according to the Scriptures
C. SUBSTITUTIONARY DEATH OF JESUS CHRIST
We believe that Jesus Christ, perfect and without sin (a),
died as a substitutionary sacrifice on the cross (b), bearing punishment for all
the sins of the entire world, past, present and future (c).
a. (perfect)
2Cor 5:21
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the
righteousness of God in Him.
1Pet 1:18-19
Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold,
from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the
precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.
1Pet 2:22
"Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth";
1Pet 3:18
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might
bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit,
1John 3:5
And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is
no sin.
b. (substitutionary sacrifice)
Rom 3:23-26
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely
by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth
as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness,
because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously
committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might
be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
Rom 5:6-8
For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the
ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good
man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us,
in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
1Cor 15:3-4
For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died
for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He
rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.
c. (for all sins)
2Cor 5:14-21
For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for
all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no
longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again. Therefore,
from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have known
Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer. Therefore, if
anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold,
all things have become new. Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to
Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation,
that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing
their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us:
we implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God. For He made Him who
knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in
Him.
1Tim 2:5-6
For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,
who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
1John 2:2 And He Himself is the propitiation for
our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.
D. THE GODHEAD
We believe in the one (a) eternal God (b) existing in three
persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (c). They are co-eternal (d) and coequal
as to nature, attributes, and perfections (e).
a. (one God)
Deut 4:35
To you it was shown, that you might know that the LORD Himself is God; there is
none other besides Him.
Deut 6:4
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one!
Isa 45:5-6
I am the LORD, and there is no other; There is no God besides Me. I will
gird you, though you have not known Me, That they may know from the rising of
the sun to its setting That there is none besides Me. I am the LORD, and there
is no other
Jas 2:19
You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe--and
tremble!
b. (eternal God)
Ps 90:2
Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and
the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
John 1:1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
c. (Father, Son and Holy Spirit)
Isa 48:16-17
"Come near to Me, hear this: I have not spoken in secret from the beginning;
From the time that it was, I was there. And now the Lord GOD and His Spirit Have
sent Me." Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, The Holy One of Israel: "I am the
LORD your God, Who teaches you to profit, Who leads you by the way you should go
Mat 3:16-17
When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold,
the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a
dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying,
"This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
Mat 28:19
"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name
of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
2Cor 13:14
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of
the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.
1John 5:7
For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the
Holy Spirit; and these three are one.
d. (co-eternal)
Gen 1:1-2
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without
form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God
was hovering over the face of the waters.
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word
was with God, and the Word was God.
e. (co-equal in attributes)
Isa 48:16
"Come near to Me, hear this: I have not spoken in secret from the beginning;
From the time that it was, I was there. And now the Lord GOD and His Spirit Have
sent Me."
John 5:17-18
But Jesus answered them, "My Father has been working until now, and I have been
working." Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not
only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself
equal with God.
John 10:30
"I and My Father are one."
1John 5:7
For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the
Holy Spirit; and these three are one.
E. DEITY OF JESUS CHRIST
We believe that the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, the
eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God, having been conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary (a), lived a sinless life, did not
possess a sinful nature (b), and is both true God and true man (c).
a. (born of virgin)
Isa 7:14
"Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall
conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.
Mat 1:18
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was
betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the
Holy Spirit.
Luke 1:34-35
Then Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I do not know a man?" And
the angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the
power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is
to be born will be called the Son of God.”
b. (perfect)
2Cor 5:21
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the
righteousness of God in Him.
Heb 4:15
For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but
was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Heb 7:26
For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled,
separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens;
1John 3:5 And
you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no
sin.
c. (both God and Man)
John 1:1-3
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without
Him nothing was made that was made.
John 1:14
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory
as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
Phil 2:5-7
Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form
of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no
reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.
Heb 2:17
Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a
merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make
propitiation for the sins of the people.
F. RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST
We believe that the physical body of Jesus Christ was
resurrected (a) and ascended into heaven (b) where He is our Advocate and High
Priest (c).
a. (physical resurrection)
John 20:26-27
And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them.
Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, "Peace to
you!" Then He said to Thomas, "Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and
reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but
believing."
1Cor 15:3-8
For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died
for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He
rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He was seen by
Cephas, then by the twelve. After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren
at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen
asleep. After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. Then last of
all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time.
b. (ascended to heaven)
Luke 24:50-52
And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed
them. Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them
and carried up into heaven. And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem
with great joy,
Acts 1:9-11
Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a
cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward
heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, who also
said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus,
who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw
Him go into heaven."
1Pet 3:21-22
There is also an antitype which now saves us--baptism (not the removal of the
filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the
resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand
of God, angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him.
c. (advocate and priest)
Rom 8:34
Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen,
who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.
Heb 7:24-25
But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. Therefore
He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him,
since He always lives to make intercession for them.
Heb 8:1
Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High
Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the
heavens,
1John 2:1
My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if
anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
G. SPIRITUALITY
Just as salvation is by grace though faith, so also the
whole Christian way of life is by grace through faith. We believe that
spirituality is an absolute condition in the life of a believer in the present
age wherein he is filled or controlled by the Holy Spirit, walking in love and
fellowship with the Lord Jesus Christ. We believe that spirituality is distinct
from maturity; that a believer becomes carnal through an act of mental, verbal,
or overt sin; and that spirituality or fellowship with Christ is restored solely
by personal confession of that sin to God the Father.
John 15:7-8
"If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire,
and it shall be done for you. "By this My Father is glorified, that you bear
much fruit; so you will be My disciples.
Rom 6:11-13
Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God
in Christ Jesus our Lord. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body,
that you should obey it in its lusts. And do not present your members as
instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being
alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
2Cor 5:6-7
So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are
absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. I say then: Walk in
the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
Eph 5:15-20
See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the
time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what
the will of the Lord is. And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation;
but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and
spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving
thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ,
1John 1:9
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to
cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
H. RESPONSIBILITY OF THE BELIEVERS
It is God's will that every believer should grow in grace
and in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ by the regular and frequent intake
of Bible Doctrine. This is the basis of glorifying Jesus Christ in the angelic
conflict (a). Every believer has been called with a holy calling to walk not
after the flesh but after the spirit, and so to live in the spirit that they
should not fulfill the lust of the flesh; but the flesh being still in us to the
end of the earthly life, needs to be kept constantly in subjection to Christ, or
it will surely manifest itself to dishonor His name (b).
a. (grow in grace)
John 17:14-17
"I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not
of the world, just as I am not of the world. "I do not pray that You should take
them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. "They
are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. "Sanctify them by Your
truth. Your word is truth.
Mat 4:4
But He answered and said, "It is written, `Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'"
Eph 4:11-16
And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and
some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of
ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity
of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the
measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be
children, tossed to and from and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by
the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but,
speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the
head--Christ-- from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every
joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its
share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.
2Pet 3:17-18
You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also
fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked;
but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him
be the glory both now and forever. Amen.
b. (lust of the flesh)
Rom 8:12-14
Therefore, brethren, we are debtors--not to the flesh, to live according to the
flesh For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit
you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by
the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
Rom 13:14
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to
fulfill its lusts.
Gal 5:16-25
I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and
these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you
wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works
of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness,
lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of
wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness,
revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you
in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom
of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there
is no law. And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions
and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Eph 4:22-24
That you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows
corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your
mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in
true righteousness and holiness.
Eph 5:18
And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the
Spirit,
Col 3:1-10
If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where
Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not
on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in
God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in
glory. Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication,
uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Because
of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, in
which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them. But now you yourselves
are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out
of your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man
with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge
according to the image of Him who created him,
I. SATAN
We believe that Satan is a created being who exists in
personality and reality. He is the enemy of both God and of believers. He is
the leader of a group of fallen angels.
Job 1:6-7
Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the
LORD, and Satan also came among them. And the LORD said to Satan, "From where do
you come?" So Satan answered the LORD and said, "From going to and from on the
earth, and from walking back and forth on it."
Mat 4:2-11
And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. Now
when the tempter came to Him, he said, "If You are the Son of God, command that
these stones become bread." But He answered and said, "It is written, `Man shall
not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of
God.'" Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of
the temple, and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down.
For it is written: `He shall give His angels charge over you,' and, `In their
hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.'" Jesus
said to him, "It is written again, `You shall not tempt the LORD your God.'"
Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all
the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, "All these things
I will give You if You will fall down and worship me." Then Jesus said to him,
"Away with you, Satan! For it is written, `You shall worship the LORD your God,
and Him only you shall serve.'" Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came
and ministered to Him.
Mat 25:41
"Then He will also say to those on the left hand, `Depart from Me, you cursed,
into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:
Acts 5:3
But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy
Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?
1Pet 5:8
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a
roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
Rev 12:7-10
And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and
the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place
found for them in heaven any longer. So the great dragon was cast out, that
serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was
cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Then I heard a loud
voice saying in heaven, "Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our
God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who
accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.”
J. ETERNAL STATE
We believe that all those who reject God's provision of
redemption through the death of Christ are eternally separated from God (a);
they will be cast into the Lake of Fire where they will not be annihilated but
will be punished with everlasting torment (b). We believe in a literal heaven
(c). The Church-age believers pass immediately into God's presence at death
(d).
a. (separation)
Luke 16:19-26
"There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared
sumptuously every day. "But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of
sores, who was laid at his gate, "desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell
from the rich man's table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. "So it
was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The
rich man also died and was buried. "And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up
his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. "Then he cried and
said, `Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the
tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this
flame.' "But Abraham said, `Son, remember that in your lifetime you received
your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and
you are tormented. `And besides all this, between us and you there is a great
gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can
those from there pass to us.”
John 3:17-18
"For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the
world through Him might be saved. "He who believes in Him is not condemned; but
he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the
name of the only begotten Son of God.”
John 5:25-29
"Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead
will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. "For as the
Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself,
"and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of
Man. "Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the
graves will hear His voice "and come forth--those who have done good, to the
resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of
condemnation.”
b. (Lake of Fire)
Mat 25:41
"Then He will also say to those on the left hand, `Depart from Me, you cursed,
into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.”
Rev 20:14-15
Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.
c. (heaven)
Acts 7:55-56
But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of
God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, and said, "Look! I see the
heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!"
Phil 3:20
For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the
Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,
1Thes 4:16
For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an
archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.
d. (with God)
John 14:3
"And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to
Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”
2Cor 5:8
We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be
present with the Lord.
1Thes 4:17
Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the
clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.
K. RAPTURE AND RESURRECTION
Believers who have died remain in heaven in conscious bliss
until the resurrection of their glorified bodies at the Rapture when body and
soul will be united and remain with the Lord forever (a). Old Testament and
Tribulation believers will receive their resurrection bodies at the Second
Advent (b).
a. (with Lord forever)
1Cor 15:42-58
So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption, it is
raised in incorruption. It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is
sown in weakness, it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body, it is raised
a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. And so
it is written, "The first man Adam became a living being." The last Adam became
a life-giving spirit. However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural, and
afterward the spiritual. The first man was of the earth, made of dust; the
second Man is the Lord from heaven. As was the man of dust, so also are those
who are made of dust; and as is the heavenly Man, so also are those who are
heavenly. And as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear
the image of the heavenly Man. Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood
cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption.
Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be
changed-- in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the
trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be
changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put
on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this
mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is
written: "Death is swallowed up in victory." "O Death, where is your sting? O
Hades, where is your victory?" The sting of death is sin, and the strength of
sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord
Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always
abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the
Lord.
Phil 3:20-21
For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the
Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be
conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able
even to subdue all things to Himself.
1Thes 4:13-18
But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen
asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus
died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.
For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain
until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. For
the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an
archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.
Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the
clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.
Therefore comfort one another with these words.
b. (OT believers)
Dan 12:1-2
"At that time Michael shall stand up, The great prince who stands watch over the
sons of your people; And there shall be a time of trouble, Such as never was
since there was a nation, Even to that time. And at that time your people shall
be delivered, Every one who is found written in the book. And many of those who
sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, Some to everlasting life, Some to
shame and everlasting contempt.
Rev 20:4-6
And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them.
Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus
and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had
not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and
reigned with Christ for a thousand years. But the rest of the dead did not live
again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.
Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the
second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and
shall reign with Him a thousand years.
L. THE HOLY SPIRIT
We believe that the Holy Spirit is God. He is a distinct
person of the Godhead who convicts the world of sin, righteousness and judgment
(a); regenerates those who believe (b); baptizes them into the body of Christ
(c); indwells all believers of the present age (d); seals them unto the day of
redemption (e); is the only source of power for acceptable worship and service
(f); is the infallible interpreter of Holy Scripture (g); is ever present to
testify concerning Jesus Christ (h). It should be the desire of every believer
to be controlled by the Holy Spirit (i).
a. (person who convicts)
John 14:16-17
"And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may
abide with you forever-- "the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive,
because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with
you and will be in you.
John 16:7-11
"Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for
if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will
send Him to you. "And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of
righteousness, and of judgment: "of sin, because they do not believe in Me; "of
righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; "of judgment,
because the ruler of this world is judged.
1John 5:7
For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the
Holy Spirit; and these three are one.
b. (regenerates)
John 3:5-6
Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and
the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. "That which is born of the flesh
is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
Tit 3:4-5
But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by
works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved
us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,
c. (baptizes)
1Cor 12:12-13
For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one
body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. For by one Spirit we were all
baptized into one body--whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free--and have
all been made to drink into one Spirit.
d. (indwells)
John 14:16-17
"And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may
abide with you forever-- "the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive,
because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with
you and will be in you.”
Rom 8:9-11
But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God
dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life
because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the
dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to
your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
1Cor 3:16
Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells
in you?
1Cor 6:19
Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in
you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?
e. (seals)
2Cor 1:21-22
Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who
also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.
Eph 4:30
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of
redemption.
f. (source of power)
Acts 1:8
"But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you
shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the
end of the earth."
Rom 8:26-27
Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we
should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us
with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows
what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints
according to the will of God.
If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
g. (interprets Scripture)
John 14:26
"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will
teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to
you.
1Cor 2:9-16
But as it is written: "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into
the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him." But
God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all
things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man
except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of
God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world,
but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been
freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man's
wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things
with spiritual. But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of
God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are
spiritually discerned. But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself
is rightly judged by no one. For "who has known the mind of the LORD that he may
instruct Him?" But we have the mind of Christ.
h. (ever present to testify)
John 16:12-15
"I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
"However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all
truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will
speak; and He will tell you things to come. "He will glorify Me, for He will
take of what is Mine and declare it to you. "All things that the Father has are
Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.
1Pet 1:10-12
Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who
prophesied of the grace that would come to you, searching what, or what manner
of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified
beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. To them
it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the
things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the
gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven--things which angels desire to
look into.
i. (be controlled)
Eph 5:18
And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the
Spirit,
M. ETERNAL SECURITY
We believe that all believers everywhere, once saved, shall
be kept saved forever.
John 5:24
"Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent
Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from
death into life.”
John 10:28-29
"And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone
snatch them out of My hand. "My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater
than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand.”
Rom 8:1
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do
not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
Rom 8:38-39
For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities
nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any
other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is
in Christ Jesus our Lord.
1John 5:13
These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God,
that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to
believe in the name of the Son of God.
Jude 1:24-25
Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, And to present you faultless
Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, To God our Savior, Who
alone is wise, Be glory and majesty, Dominion and power, Both now and forever.
Amen.
N. GREAT TRIBULATION
We believe that when this present age ends, it will be
followed by Daniel’s seventieth week (a). The Abomination of Desolation spoken
by Daniel the prophet will appear in the middle of the seventieth week (b). The
appearance of the Abomination of Desolation will begin the most terrible time
ever known in history, called “The Great Tribulation” (c). The Great Tribuation
is finally climaxed by the visible and personal return of Jesus Christ to set up
His Kingdom (d).
a. (Daniel’s 70th week)
Dan 9:24-27
"Seventy weeks are determined For your people and for your holy city, To finish
the transgression, To make an end of sins, To make reconciliation for iniquity,
To bring in everlasting righteousness, To seal up vision and prophecy, And to
anoint the Most Holy. "Know therefore and understand, That from the going forth
of the command To restore and build Jerusalem Until Messiah the Prince, There
shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; The street shall be built again, and
the wall, Even in troublesome times. "And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah
shall be cut off, but not for Himself; And the people of the prince who is to
come Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a
flood, And till the end of the war desolations are determined. Then he shall
confirm a covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of the week He
shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations
shall be one who makes desolate, Even until the consummation, which is
determined, Is poured out on the desolate."
b. (Abomination of Desolation)
Dan 9:27
“Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of
the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of
abominations shall be one who makes desolate, Even until the consummation, which
is determined, Is poured out on the desolate."
Mat 24:15
"Therefore when you see the `abomination of desolation,' spoken of by Daniel the
prophet, standing in the holy place" (whoever reads, let him understand),
c. (Great Tribulation)
Jer 30:7
Alas! For that day is great, So that none is like it; And it is the time of
Jacob's trouble, But he shall be saved out of it.
Dan 12:1
"At that time Michael shall stand up, The great prince who stands watch over the
sons of your people; And there shall be a time of trouble, Such as never was
since there was a nation, Even to that time. And at that time your people shall
be delivered, Every one who is found written in the book.”
Mat 24:21-22
"For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the
beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. "And unless those
days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect's sake those
days will be shortened.
d. (return of the Lord)
Zec 14:1-9
Behold, the day of the LORD is coming, And your spoil will be divided in your
midst. For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem; The city
shall be taken, The houses rifled, And the women ravished. Half of the city
shall go into captivity, But the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from
the city. 3 Then the LORD will go forth And fight against those nations, As He
fights in the day of battle. And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of
Olives, Which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be
split in two, From east to west, Making a very large valley; Half of the
mountain shall move toward the north And half of it toward the south. Then you
shall flee through My mountain valley, For the mountain valley shall reach to
Azal. Yes, you shall flee As you fled from the earthquake In the days of Uzziah
king of Judah. Thus the LORD my God will come, And all the saints with You. It
shall come to pass in that day That there will be no light; The lights will
diminish. It shall be one day Which is known to the LORD--Neither day nor night.
But at evening time it shall happen That it will be light. And in that day it
shall be That living waters shall flow from Jerusalem, Half of them toward the
eastern sea And half of them toward the western sea; In both summer and winter
it shall occur. And the LORD shall be King over all the earth. In that day it
shall be--"The LORD is one," And His name one.
Mat 24:29-30
"Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and
the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the
powers of the heavens will be shaken. "Then the sign of the Son of Man will
appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will
see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
2Th 1:5-10
Which is manifest evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be
counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you also suffer; since it is a
righteous thing with God to repay with tribulation those who trouble you, and to
give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from
heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do
not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the
Lord and from the glory of His power, when He comes, in that Day, to be
glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because
our testimony among you was believed.
O. MAN CREATED AND FALLEN
We believe that the immaterial part of man was created in
the image of God but the first man, Adam, willfully sinned and fell from God's
grace (a). In Adam, all men have inherited a sinful nature and all men have
sinned and have incurred spiritual death, which is separation from God. Thus
all men now are alienated from God and remain totally unable to redeem
themselves (b). Those who reach moral responsibility are held accountable for
their sinfulness in thought, word, and deed (c). Through Jesus Christ, God
created man and all that has come into being (man, animals and the u |
